"The primary strength of this research tool is its interdisciplinary scope, containing entries in English on the following topics in the Victorian period: painting, architecture, and music; philosophy and religion; histories of England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and the British Empire; military and naval history; politics, commerce, and economics; sociology, women's studies, law, and education; science, technology, and medicine; and literature - drama, poetry, prose, and fiction. Undergraduate students will find immediate value in this resource, since it is straightforward and easy to use. Initial screens are uncluttered, a function key guide as well as serching tips appear at the bottom of each screen, and help screens are easy to understand and truly useful. Users may construct searches for words or subjects, authors, and titles, singly or in combination. Boolean operators may be used but are not necessary; advanced searching with wildcard letters is possible. Search results are clearly identified by author, title, journal or book, date, collation, area, type, and descriptor. Words used in the search are highlighted in each entry, and the search can be modified to broaden or narrow desired results with a few keystrokes. . . . Highly recommended for undergraduates and above. - R. Hanson, Muskingum College, Choice. April, 1997. p. 1321. "Victorian splendour brought up-to-date. . . . It is a unique cross-disciplinary bibliography . . . This database does perform . . . a somewhat unexpected but welcome task. Its range is so wide that it is hardly possible now to bring its various materials under the homogenising term, "Victorian". This is all to the good. Another cultural descriptor is required. It is time the name of a stodgy queen ceased to stand guard over the infinite variety of the 19th century, a variety wonderfully disclosed through this work." - Isobel Armstrong, Professor of English, Birbeck College, Times Higher Education Supplement, January 10, 1997, p.31. "One of the latest and most welcome CD-ROM products for Victorianists is an electronically searchable version of the Cumulative Bibliography of Victorian Studies put out by the Literary Information and Retrieval group (LITIR) at the University of Alberta. . . . immense usefulness of at last having an up-to-date, interdisciplinary bibliography of Victorian Studies available to us in a format that is quickly and, for the most part, accurately searchable. As such the Victorian Database is a tool that few Victorianists will want to do without." - Patrick Leary, Indiana University, Victorians Institute Journal. Volume 24, 1996, pp.247-249.
